Shooting: The Follow-Through

In the above photo, one player is one of the leading scorers in the nation, but a streaky shooter; one is one of the best three-point shooters in the nation with over 90 made three-pointers on almost 50% shooting. Can you tell which one is which by their follow-through?

  1. My guess would have been #25 (looked up roster after selecting to confirm) for some of the following subtle details in mechanics: 1) appears to me to have a slightly more open stance (i.e., shoulders not as squared to the basket); 2) off-hand palm remaining perpendicular to the shot trajectory (i.e., not rotating palm to the basket upon release); and 3) fingers of shooting hand staying connected to line of target on follow through. These are just my observations relative to my personal perspective on ideal shooting mechanics. Yes, there are plenty of shooters who shoot lights out and don’t confirm to these subtle details. I’ve seen many occasions where thumb flickers, palm rotators, shoulder shooters, square up shooters and 2 hand shooters win 3-point shootouts. There are several other factors influencing performance shooting, not the least of which is controlling your psychological state, which in turn alters your underlying physiology (discussed in book, Top Dog: The Science of Winning and Losing by Po Bronson & Ashley Merryman). However, when watching pre-game shooting, often I find that shooters with good shot mechanics tend to be the players you don’t want to leave open during the game. Just my thoughts..

Rick, I could not have said it any better.

The index finger which I think is the most important finger is pointing straight at the target.
